The Arrival of the Bats

Bats, or “chiroptera,” are the only flying mammals in the world. There are 34 species in France and 33 in Occitanie. Three or four different species have been identified in Cénevières. They spend their hibernation period in the caves near the castle, where they find constant temperature and humidity.

They arrive at the castle in late April or early May and leave in October, depending on the temperature. The first ones have just settled in the prison next to the chapel; they then move on to the attics or, in the case of another species, to a dark, damp room.

Protected species—an infrared camera will allow you to view them during your visit.
